This session will explore the critical role of the False Claims Act (FCA) in safeguarding taxpayer dollars and encouraging accountability in both federal and state programs. Originating during the Civil War under President Abraham Lincoln, the FCA remains the most effective legal tool in combating fraud against the government.
Our speakers, former US attorney Vanessa Waldref and former assistant US Attorney Dan Fruchter, will unpack the topic and provide attendees insights into the act’s unique qui tam provisions, which empower private citizens—often employees or insiders—to file lawsuits on behalf of the government and share in any recovered funds. This presentation will also cover whistleblower protections against retaliation, ensuring that individuals who speak up are not only heard but legally shielded from adverse employment actions.
Key Takeaways:
- The history and purpose of the False Claims Act and its modern relevance
- How qui tam actions work and who can file them
- Whistleblower protections and potential financial rewards
