A jury is a small group of strangers who sit together after the lawyers leave and decide which version of a story is true.
What matters most is which story survives from the first day of trial to the last, as retold in the jurors' own words.
In this webinar, Cliff Atkinson brings a filmmaker's eye to trial preparation, with the aim of equipping jurors with the tools they need to tell the plaintiff's edit of the story in deliberation.
You'll learn to treat the evidence as raw footage, your war room as an editing room, and your opening statement as the trailer.
But you don't make the final cut of the story. In the deliberation room, jurors are the final editors.
The story that wins is the one they can assemble from your clips, own as theirs, and tell each other.
You'll learn how to:
- Equip jurors to make the cut themselves, with the key pieces, a clear mental model, and the words to tell it in deliberation
- Run your war room like an editing room, where your best people review the raw footage and make the cut together
- Spot missing pieces before jurors fill in the gaps themselves, often with the harshest explanation available
- Make a cut that holds up to the evidence, while always keeping the competing cut in mind
Filmmakers sometimes spend millions on a movie that flops because they never put it in front of a real audience early. Lawyers can make the same mistake.
Cliff will also introduce a new six-week experiment called the Friday Jury Lab: lawyers sit down each week with six strangers, a pad of paper, and five pieces of evidence, and tell them the story of your case in ten minutes. Then predict what they'll say, leave the room, and observe their real reactions.
This isn't a focus group. It's skills training for you: forming mental models that stick, sharpening your predictions, and regularly stepping into the world of non-lawyers so your language matches theirs.
At the end of this webinar, you'll be invited to volunteer for the first group to try it.
