Colorado CLE Requirements

Colorado attorneys must complete 45 hours of mandatory continuing education each reporting period, including 7 hours of professional responsibility. (C.R.C.P. 250.2(1)) Professional responsibility credits must include 2 hours covering topics of equity, diversity, and inclusivity, and at least 5 credit hours covering legal ethics and professionalism. Each reporting period is 3 years and ends on December 31st.

  • Credit Calculation: 50 minutes = 1 credit hour rounded to the nearest whole number.
  • Ethics/Professionalism: Minimum 7 professionalism credits, including 2 hours of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and 5 hours of legal ethics and professionalism.
  • Formats Allowed: In-person activities and online activities that take place simultaneously with a live speaker are considered live credit. Pre-accredited on-demand courses without a live presenter are considered homestudy.
  • Self-Study: Non-accredited on-demand courses may qualify for independent study, which is capped at 9 credits per reporting period. RCLE-FORM 7 must be submitted by the attorney.
  • Carryover: No carryover credit allowed.
  • Exemptions: Those over age 72.
  • Reporting: Attorneys are responsible for reporting their own CLE Credits.

How to Track & Report Colorado CLE Credits

  • Attorneys are responsible for tracking and reporting their Colorado MCLE credits.
  • Certify and submit your records of attendance online using the Colorado CLE Track system.
  • Only pre-approved courses can be entered into the system.
  • Programs need to be completed by December 31st every three years, but you have until January 31st the following year to report your credit. 

Special Rules: Remote Programs & Reciprocity

  • On-Demand Courses that are submitted by the provider and approved by Colorado are considered homestudy and do not have a cap.
  • On-Demand Courses that are not submitted by the provider can be submitted by the attorney as an independent self-study credit and are capped at 9 credits for the reporting period. Professional Responsibility credits are not allowed to be completed through independent self-study. 
  • Live out-of-state courses (including live webinars) that are not submitted by the provider can be submitted by the attorney for credit. 
  • Attorneys whose primary residence and business address are out of state can use the CLE obligations in their home jurisdiction to submit a CLE Compliance via Comity Statement.

Qualifying Ethics & Professionalism Topics

  • Legal Ethics, including the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct, Colorado Code of Judicial Conduct, ABA model Rules, or rules relating to other legal authorities.
  • Legal Professionalism, including the Colorado Attorney Oath of Admission, and the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI), including equal access to the justice system, representing diverse populations, and the elimination of bias in the legal system.

Colorado CLE Provider & Course Standards

  • Course Content: The course must have a primary objective of promoting the professional competence of lawyers and judges and must relate directly to the practice of law.
  • Presenters: Must be qualified in the subject area by knowledge, training, skill, or education.
  • Educational Materials: Must be detailed, high-quality, and distributed on or before the course time.
  • Certification: Provider must provide the attendee with a certificate of attendance.
  • Evaluation: Attendees must complete an evaluation of the program. 

Key Colorado CLE Deadlines

  • Complete all Colorado credits by December 31st of your 3-year reporting period.
  • Report credits by January 31st of the following year or file a make-up plan.
  • Complete make-up programs by May 31st.
