The third illustration is an axial view of the L5-S1 disc demonstrating a posterior disc herniation with associated compression and irritation of the L5 nerve roots bilaterally. Best used to demonstrate pain in the lumbar area, buttock and lower extremity, as well as a bilateral disc bulge or herniation at L5-S1.
